Does compostable packaging go in the food-waste bin?

Only if the local organics programme explicitly accepts that type of compostable packaging.

Complete answer

The answer

“Compostable” does not automatically mean suitable for a home compost bin or for every municipal food-waste system. Industrial-composting certification and home-composting claims describe different conditions.

Some organics facilities reject compostable plastics because they cannot distinguish them from conventional plastic or because their process is not designed for those products. Read both the product certification and the local collection rule.

What to do

  • Identify whether the product is home- or industrial-compostable.
  • Check whether the local organics service accepts it.
  • Do not put it in recycling simply because it is plant-based or compostable.
