Where do small electrical appliances go?

Use an e-waste collection point, recycling centre or retailer take-back programme that accepts small electrical equipment.

Complete answer

The answer

Kettles, toasters, hair dryers, routers and similar devices contain mixed materials and electrical components. They do not belong in ordinary packaging recycling.

Remove easily removable batteries if the local programme asks you to, but do not dismantle mains-powered equipment when it creates electrical or physical risk.

What to do

  • Keep appliances out of household packaging recycling.
  • Check retailer take-back and civic collection.
  • Separate removable batteries only when safe and required.
