Can bubble wrap be recycled?

Bubble wrap is a flexible plastic film and is usually not suitable for ordinary mixed or rigid-plastic household recycling unless the local service explicitly accepts films.

Complete answer

The answer

Where clean plastic-film collection exists, bubble wrap may be accepted with bags and films. Remove tape, labels and other materials when practical. Reuse is often preferable when the wrap is still clean and intact.

Do not place it in a household recycling bin simply because it has a plastic resin code; films can wrap around sorting machinery in systems designed for rigid containers.

What to do

  • Reuse clean bubble wrap when possible.
  • Look for a dedicated plastic-film route.
  • Keep it out of ordinary recycling if films are excluded locally.
