Where can I drop off household batteries?

Use a battery collection point, retailer take-back or recycling centre that explicitly accepts batteries.

Complete answer

The answer

Loose batteries should not be mixed with ordinary packaging recycling. Lithium batteries in particular can cause fires when damaged, crushed or compacted in collection vehicles and sorting facilities.

Keep batteries dry and protect exposed terminals when appropriate, especially for lithium cells and 9-volt batteries. A swollen, leaking or damaged battery may require a special hazardous-material procedure, so contact the collection operator before transport.

What to do

  • Use a dedicated battery route.
  • Protect exposed terminals where appropriate.
  • Contact the operator for damaged, swollen or leaking batteries.
